A tiny molecules Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical in the Cannabis plant, which is none also known as, hemp, or weed plant. Also we use CBD as a medicine and a nutraceutical, with user depending on the medical benefits its has to offer.
Cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid which was discovered in 1940 by a Harvard chemist Roger Adams that was a game charger in my opinion because this lead to a chain of events. Dr. Raphael Mechoulam in 1963, actually described the chemical structure of CBD, which later year helped along the debunking chemical structure of THC. Showing that unlike its best friend THC everyone loves, CDB is not psychoactive, so it users will not get stoned.
It is one of 113 identified cannabinoids in cannabis plants, along with tetrahydrocannabinol, and accounts for up to 40% of the plant’s extract.
Here is so words from a interview with Dr. Raphael Mechoulam – “(In the early 1960s) I was surprised to find out that while morphine had been isolated from opium 150 years previously, and cocaine had been isolated 100 years previously, the chemistry of cannabis was not well known,” he says. “The active compound or compounds had never been isolated in pure form, and the structures were not known. In order to understand the pharmacology and do clinical trials, you need a strong chemical basis.” This search led Mechoulam and his associates to deep dive into the chemistry of cannabinoids, with a special focus on CBD.
